SIGGRAPH Asia 2022 heads to Daegu, South Korea

Asia’s leading Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques trade conference and exhibition will reveal groundbreaking technologies that are accelerating innovation and change in the graphics industries.

Daegu, South Korea, 16 November 2022 – The 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia will take place this 6–9 December at EXCO, in Daegu, South Korea. The event theme celebrates a ‘Colorful World’, and this year SIGGRAPH Asia expects to attract attendance from over 5,000 technical professionals.

Conference Chair, Professor Soon Ki Jung, said, “It is such an honor that Daegu has been chosen again to host the SIGGRAPH Asia 2022 after the 2020 event moved to a virtual edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we strive to provide a better platform to interact with global pioneers of computer graphics and emerging technologies, it will be awe-inspiring moments for all attendees.” He added, “SIGGRAPH Asia and its community are in the vanguard of computer graphics within multifaceted contributors and inspiring submissions. SIGGRAPH Asia 2022 comprises a trade conference and exhibition. Key programs include Technical Papers, where new scholarly work is juried, explored and discussed by academia, the Computer Animation Festival, whose films are accompanied by panel discussions featuring representatives from the world’s leading animation houses, as well as Art Gallery led by Soh Yeong Roh as Program Chair and will feature an experiential creative space for visitors to get up close with the art and their artists. While the conference presents discussions on the business aspects and technicalities of working with CGI, FX, and animation, the exhibition is a compelling showcase of the latest technologies in a manner that heightens all senses. It features the latest cutting-edge hardware and software applications for an immersive experience.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

SIGGRAPH Asia 2022’s Keynote sessions will deliver insights into artificial intelligence and immersive content. This year’s speakers presently include:

Celebrated artificial intelligence and technology leader, Luc Julia, Chief Scientific Officer for Renault, a best-selling author, will deliver a talk, ’There is no such thing as Artificial Intelligence‘, arguing that the false narrative around AI runs the risk of abandoning all research in this field and threatening advances in disciplines such as machine learning or deep learning, while they are still in their infancy and can still bring much more to humanity.

Sean Lee, Chief Executive Officer of award-winning d’strict, a Korean digital design and immersive media technology company, has also been confirmed as a keynote speaker. Mr. Lee will share his expertise on ‘Changes in the Visual Arts Market Brought About by Immersive Content Technology’. He will introduce the changes immersive content brings to the visual arts market and share his thoughts on plans to expand the art experience through new technologies like crypto.

SIGGRAPH ASIA 2022 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Art Gallery showcases the latest innovation in digital art. This year’s Art Gallery Theme is ‘Sustainability & Non-fungibility’. The exhibition will analyze the rapid boom of online cultures based on computer graphics such as Metaverse, NFTs, and Cryptocurrency in a pandemic-fueled era. However, the impact of computer technology, including Cryptocurrency mining on climate crisis and pollution remains significant and requires urgent conversation and action.
  • Business & Innovation Symposium invites business professionals, researchers, and production leaders to gather for an interactive day of sessions, networking, and technological exploration. The Symposium program helps community members to catch on to business trends, find the right business partners, tap ecosystems, monetize talent or product, as well as source funding. This year’s Symposium will explore themes like Login with a new face: an era where anyone can choose the face they want; the next level of digital content; and user-oriented product development methods in CLO Virtual Fashion.
  • Computer Animation Festival (CAF); Asia’s premier computer animation festival, will showcase the most expansive and compelling program in SIGGRAPH’s history. From short films to scientific visualizations to AI-enhanced deepfakes, this year’s festival will host highly anticipated screenings at the Electronic Theater and Animation Theater. CAF promises thought-provoking samples of the world’s best CG animation. Three prestigious 2022 awards will also be given out at the event: Best Student Project, Jury Special, and Best in Show.
  • Emerging Technologies is centered around the theme ‘New Normal’, highlights the vital role new technology plays in driving research, development and deployment of innovative solutions that make a great impact on the public. Co-Chaired by Hye Yeon Nam, Associate Professor, Louisiana State University and Daniel Saakes, Associate Professor University of Twente, recognizes some of the accepted Emerging Technologies with Awards.

  • Games program will demonstrate the advances made in Computer Graphics, VR/AR/MR, and real-time, which are pushing games development forward. From design and engines to VR and eSports, the SIGGRAPH Asia 2022 Games Program offers inspiration for all game-lovers. The Games program features a series of top speakers from world leading studios who will share their thoughts on the latest gaming technologies and techniques.
  • Posters program is an interactive forum for innovative ideas that are still in raw stages. A truly collaborative session between students, researchers, artists, enthusiasts, and industry veterans, aims to give visitors a behind-the-scenes view of new commercial and artistic work. Presentation of ideas is made to a global CG industry for feedback on how to improve techniques further.
  • Technical Communications this year is a presentation of impressive cutting-edge work with real-life solutions to challenges faced today. Visitors will see thought provoking ideas, valuable know-how from production work, and new interdisciplinary applications. 20 Technical Communications will be presented in 19 different themed technical sessions alongside related Technical Papers. Students, researchers, and professionals can find presentations on the entire range of computer graphics techniques and technologies.
  • Real-Time Live! breathes life into the unimaginable and transcends users into the realms of metaverse. A must-attend event, visitors will enjoy the finest innovation in real-time graphics and interactivity for a live showcase and competition. From mobile games to console games to virtual and augmented reality, creators of cutting-edge real-time graphics will give unprecedented access to how their creations were crafted and share techniques used to deliver jaw-dropping results.
  • XR, Extended Reality (XR) is a culmination of real and virtual elements generated by computer technology, including Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR). Presentations in the Experience Hall will range from the Future of 3D Teleconferencing to VR in healthcare, interactive education and AR in immersive performance will demonstrate technology is blurring the line in the future of the physical and digital world.
  • NEW: Best Technical Papers Awards & Technical Papers Interactive Discussion; the Technical Papers program is the premier international forum for disseminating new scholarly work in computer graphics and interactive techniques. For the first time at SIGGRAPH Asia, awards will be presented to the Best Technical Papers. Jehee Lee, the Chair of the Technical Papers committee, remarked as to how creative and original submissions of technical papers are critical in advancing computer graphics and interactive techniques in both traditional areas such as animation, imaging and immersive experiences across diverse industries including medical and architecture.
  • NEW: Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion; SIGGRAPH Asia has created a safe space to start the conversation on how to advance diversity for a stronger and richer creative community. BIOGRAPHIES

  1. Professor Soon Ki Jung is the Head of the Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering, Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea. His research areas include a broad range of computer vision, computer graphics, and virtual reality topics. Dr. Jung has been an active Executive Board Member of Human–Computer Interaction, Computer Graphics, and Multimedia societies in South Korea.
  2. Dr. Luc Julia is currently the Chief Scientific Officer for Renault. He has held significant leadership positions such as: CTO and Senior Vice President of Innovation for Samsung Electronics, Co-Creator of the Apple Voice Assistant Siri, Chief Technologist at Hewlett-Packard and co-founded several start-ups in the Silicon Valley.

Dr. Luc Julia first went to MIT, then joined SRI International (part of Stanford University), located in Silicon Valley in California, where he worked as a researcher in the field of voice interfaces. While conducting research at SRI International, he was involved in the creation of Nuance Communications, which is now the world leader is speech recognition.

At Renault, Dr. Luc Julia oversees the research and development of Artificial Intelligence, Man-Machine Interfaces, Connectivity and Software for their integration into the Group’s products and services plan.

He is a recipient of Légion d’Honneur, the highest order of France, and member of its National Academy of Technologies, he holds degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Paris.

He is the bestselling author of the book, “There is no such thing as Artificial Intelligence” and holds dozens of patents and is recognized as one of the top 100 most influential French developers in the digital world.

  1. Sean Lee is the CEO of d’strict, a digital design company headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Lee has been in the design industry for 15 years since he first joined the company in 2007 and worked in various capacities, from management support to business development, before assuming the leadership in 2016.

He drew the industry’s attention by producing and directing projects that provided the creatives with better working environments, such as ARTE MUSEUM. Recent projects like in Times Square and a’strict, the company’s own media artist unit, are born out of his continuous effort to cultivate the potential of media art. A certified public accountant (KICPA), Lee gave up a stable career and chose a different and unique path compared to his then-cohorts. He has been working tirelessly to innovate the design industry ever since.
